    Visual detection of blemishes in potatoes using minimalist boosted classifiers

    This paper introduces novel methods for detecting blemishes in potatoes using machine vision. After segmentation of the potato from the background, a pixel-wise classifier is trained to detect blemishes using features extracted from the image. A very large set of candidate features, based on statistical information relating to the colour and texture of the region surrounding a given pixel, is first extracted. Then an adaptive boosting algorithm (AdaBoost) is used to automatically select the best features for discriminating between blemishes and non-blemishes. With this approach, different features can be selected for different potato varieties, while also handling the natural variation in fresh produce due to different seasons, lighting conditions, etc. The results show that the method is able to build ``minimalist'' classifiers that optimise detection performance at low computational cost. In experiments, blemish detectors were trained for both white and red potato varieties, achieving 89.6\% and 89.5\% accuracy, respectively

    A prototype low-cost machine vision system for automatic identification and quantification of potato defects

    This paper reports on a current project to develop a prototype system for the automatic identification and quantification of potato defects based on machine vision. The system developed uses off-the-shelf hardware, including a low-cost vision sensor and a standard desktop computer with a graphics processing unit (GPU), together with software algorithms to enable detection, identification and quantification of common defects affecting potatoes at near-real-time frame rates. The system uses state-of-the-art image processing and machine learning techniques to automatically learn the appearance of different defect types. It also incorporates an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) to enable easy set-up of the system by quality control (QC) staff working in the industry

    Effect of environment and cultivar on the expression of banana streak disease symptoms in Kenya

    Banana (Musa spp.) is grown for subsistence and income generation by 80% of small scale farmers all year round in Kenya hence it is an important food security crop. However viral diseases such as banana streak disease (BSD), caused by Banana streak virus, hamper the production of the crop. BSV has been reported to be present in all the commercial banana cultivars in Kenya. Tissue culture materials of 15 cultivars were evaluated for BSV expression so as to determine the tolerant cultivars under field and greenhouse conditions and stages of disease expression. A number of factors including plant age, cultivar, season and growth site were investigated in the greenhouse and field to assess their effect on BSD symptom expression. Statistical analysis system (SAS) for ANOVA was used for analysis of data for the experiments. Results indicated that BSD symptom expression is significantly influenced by all the factors under investigation. Significant correlation was also observed between symptom severity and plant height, girth, and number of leaves. Findings of this study will be invaluable to stakeholders and researchers in banana industry by laying a foundation for development and adoption of viable BSD management strategies.Keywords: Banana streak virus, Banana streak disease, symptoms expression, tissue culture, ELISAAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(16), pp. 1999-200

    Integration of Banana Streak Badnavirus into theMusaGenome: Molecular and Cytogenetic Evidence

    AbstractBreeding and tissue culture of certain cultivars of bananas (Musa) have led to high levels of banana streak badnavirus (BSV) infection in progeny from symptomless parents. BSV DNA hybridized to genomic DNA of one such parent, Obino l'Ewai, suggesting integration of viral sequences. Sequencing of clones of Obino l'Ewai genomic DNA revealed an interface between BSV andMusasequences and a complex BSV integrant.In situhybridization revealed two different BSV sequence locations in Obino l'Ewai chromosomes and a complex arrangement of BSV andMusasequences was shown by probing stretched DNA fibers. This is the first report of integrated sequences that possibly lead to a plant pararetrovirus episomal infection by a mechanism differing markedly from animal retroviral systems

    Investigation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) released as a result of spoilage in whole broccoli, carrots, onions and potatoes with HS-SPME and GC-MS

    Vegetable spoilage renders a product undesirable due to changes in sensory characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate the change in the fingerprint of VOC composition that occur as a result of spoilage in broccoli, carrots, onions and potatoes. SPME and GC-MS techniques were used to identify and determine the relative abundance of VOC associated with both fresh and spoilt vegetables. Although a number of similar compounds were detected in varying quantities in the headspace of fresh and spoilt samples, certain compounds which were detected in the headspace of spoilt vegetables were however absent in fresh samples. Analysis of the headspace of fresh vegetables indicated the presence of a variety of alkanes, alkenes and terpenes. Among VOCs identified in the spoilt samples were dimethyl disulphide and dimethyl sulphide in broccoli; Ethyl propanoate and Butyl acetate in carrots; 1-Propanethioland 2-Hexyl-5-methyl-3(2H)-furanone in onions; and 2, 3-Butanediol in potatoes. The overall results of this study indicate the presence of VOCs that can serve as potential biomarkers for early detection of quality deterioration and in turn enhance operational and quality control decisions in the vegetable industry

    B chromosomes are associated with redistribution of genetic recombination towards lower-recombination chromosomal regions in perennial ryegrass

    Supernumerary β€˜B’ chromosomes are non-essential components of the genome present in a range of plant and animal species – including many grasses. Within diploid and polyploid ryegrass and fescue species, including the forage grass perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), the presence of B chromosomes has been reported as influencing both chromosome pairing and chiasma frequencies. In this study, the effects of the presence/absence of B chromosomes on genetic recombination has been investigated through generating DArT marker genetic maps for 6 perennial ryegrass diploid populations, the pollen parents of which contained either two B or zero B chromosomes. Through genetic and cytological analyses of these progenies and their parents we have identified that, while overall cytological estimates of chiasma frequencies were significantly lower in pollen mother cells with two B chromosomes as compared to zero B chromosomes, the recombination frequencies within some marker intervals were actually increased, particularly for marker intervals in lower recombination regions of chromosomes, i.e., pericentromeric regions. Thus, in perennial ryegrass, the presence of two B chromosomes redistributed patterns of meiotic recombination in pollen mother cells in ways which could increase the range of allelic variation available to plant breeders

    Minimal muscle damage after a marathon and no influence of beetroot juice on inflammation and recovery

    This study examined whether beetroot juice (BTJ) would attenuate inflammation and muscle damage following a marathon. Using a double blind, independent group’s design, 34 runners (~16 previous marathons completed) consumed either BTJ or an isocaloric placebo (PLA) for 3 days following a marathon. Maximal isometric voluntary contractions (MIVC), countermovement jumps (CMJ), muscle soreness, serum cytokines, leucocytosis, creatine kinase (CK), high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured pre, post, and on the 2 days after the marathon. CMJ and MIVC were reduced after the marathon (P0.05). Muscle soreness was increased in the day after the marathon (BTJ; 45Β±48 vs. PLA; 46Β±39 mm) and had returned to baseline by day 2, irrespective of supplementation (P=0.694). Cytokines (Interleukin-6; IL-6, interleukin-8, tumour necrosis factor-Ξ±) were increased immediately post-marathon but apart from IL-6 had returned to baseline values by day 1 post. No interaction effects were evident for IL-6 (P=0.213). Leucocytes increased 1.7 fold after the race and remained elevated 2 days post, irrespective of supplement (P<0.0001). CK peaked at 1 day post marathon (BTJ: 965Β±967 & PLA: 1141Β±979 IUΒ·L-1) and like AST and hs-CRP, was still elevated 2 days after the marathon (P<0.05); however, no group differences were present for these variables. Beetroot juice did not attenuate inflammation or reduce muscle damage following a marathon, possibly because most of these indices were not markedly different from baseline values in the days after the marathon

    The assessment of neuromuscular fatigue during 120 min of simulated soccer exercise

    Purpose This investigation examined the development of neuromuscular fatigue during a simulated soccer match incorporating a period of extra time (ET) and the reliability of these responses on repeated test occasions. Methods Ten male amateur football players completed a 120 min soccer match simulation (SMS). Before, at half time (HT), full time (FT), and following a period of ET, twitch responses to supramaximal femoral nerve and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) were obtained from the knee-extensors to measure neuromuscular fatigue. Within 7 days of the first SMS, a second 120 min SMS was performed by eight of the original ten participants to assess the reliability of the fatigue response. Results At HT, FT, and ET, reductions in maximal voluntary force (MVC; βˆ’11, βˆ’20 and βˆ’27%, respectively, P ≀ 0.01), potentiated twitch force (βˆ’15, βˆ’23 and βˆ’23%, respectively, P < 0.05), voluntary activation (FT, βˆ’15 and ET, βˆ’18%, P ≀ 0.01), and voluntary activation measured with TMS (βˆ’11, βˆ’15 and βˆ’17%, respectively, P ≀ 0.01) were evident. The fatigue response was robust across both trials; the change in MVC at each time point demonstrated a good level of reliability (CV range 6–11%; ICC2,1 0.83–0.94), whilst the responses identified with motor nerve stimulation showed a moderate level of reliability (CV range 5–18%; ICC2,1 0.63–0.89) and the data obtained with motor cortex stimulation showed an excellent level of reliability (CV range 3–6%; ICC2,1 0.90–0.98). Conclusion Simulated soccer exercise induces a significant level of fatigue, which is consistent on repeat tests, and involves both central and peripheral mechanisms

    Identifying future models for delivering genetic services: a nominal group study in primary care

    BACKGROUND: To enable primary care medical practitioners to generate a range of possible service delivery models for genetic counselling services and critically assess their suitability. METHODS: Modified nominal group technique using in primary care professional development workshops. RESULTS: 37 general practitioners in Wales, United Kingdom too part in the nominal group process. The practitioners who attended did not believe current systems were sufficient to meet anticipated demand for genetic services. A wide range of different service models was proposed, although no single option emerged as a clear preference. No argument was put forward for genetic assessment and counselling being central to family practice, neither was there a voice for the view that the family doctor should become skilled at advising patients about predictive genetic testing and be able to counsel patients about the wider implications of genetic testing for patients and their family members, even for areas such as common cancers. Nevertheless, all the preferred models put a high priority on providing the service in the community, and often co-located in primary care, by clinicians who had developed expertise. CONCLUSION: There is a need for a wider debate about how healthcare systems address individual concerns about genetic concerns and risk, especially given the increasing commercial marketing of genetic tests
